4.5 - 5 Hour Sail with the Whales

Read our guests testimonials!

There is no other tour like it on the BC coast!

Sail with the whales.... moving quietly, sharing in spirit with the orca. For some, the experience of viewing orcas while sailing is the ultimate.

Sailing with the Whales

If you are looking for a tour that is truly eco-friendly, these 5 and 8 hour whale watching tours are for you. We have been offering these ecologically friendly tours for the last 19 years.
On tour, S.V. Tuan travels by engine power at a speed that is compatible with marine life.

When the orcas are foraging and it is not possible to sail, we turn off the engine and drift in the tide. Hydrophones carried on board enable passengers to listen to orca (and dolphin) vocalizations and if they are foraging, it is usual at this time that they will also be vocalizing.

5 hour tours:
On most five hour tours, Orcas, Minke and Humpback Whales are well within reach and the viewing percentage is in the high 90's.
Every tour is different from any other tour previously taken. The experience will depend entirely upon the pod(s) encountered, the activity that the pod(s) are involved in at the time of viewing, the waterway that they are located in and the direction in which they are traveling.

Resting Killer Whales

Each and every encounter is an empowering one to the human spirit and one that brings great joy and excitement to people of all ages.

Our tours are nostalgic of an era when the pace of life was slower and where the "getting there" was part of the adventure. It is where people from all walks of life, and from all corners of the world meet on a particular day; all in anticipation of fulfilling a lifetime desire to see orcas in the wild, in a gentle and unobtrusive manner. And, over a cup of organic Earl Grey tea and hot scones on the way home, it is where addresses are exchanged and strangers part as friends.

Our sailing tours are unique in that they serve an individual in a very personal manner. In recent years, we have had more people than ever before returning to take our tour after a lapse of some 2-19 years. It was overwhelming and heartwarming to welcome grandparents returning with their grown adult children and grandchildren and to see some grown children, returning as adults.

It seems that a new generation has arrived and another has grown up before our very eyes!

Because of our own strong desire and commitment to eating organic foods and beverages, most of the ingredients used in the baking of our wholesome fruit muffins and scones are organic and our tea, coffee and juice beverages are organic as well. Our dish cleaning agents are ecologically friendly and biodegradable and we do not use any disposable crockery or cutlery on board the boat; our original white corelle crockery is still with us today after some 19 years of usage.

Porpoises alongside S.V. Tuan

S.V. Tuan is a quiet vessel on the water, even when under power of her engine.
It is usual that we motor to and from the orca viewing area; but when in the vicinity of the orcas, if conditions are right , we will sail with them.

Utilizing just 4.5 L (1 gal. ) of diesel fuel / hour, Tuan's consumption of fossil fuels is minimal, as is the noise factor, when compared to most other vessels operating in the area.
Quality thermal weather gear is provided for those in need, there is a bathroom onboard and the cabin is heated on cooler days. Our 40 foot (13.3 metre) vessel is passenger certified and operated by a licensed skipper.

Johnstone Strait & Tide Pool

Tuan's cabin is of solid honduras mahogany and her interior the same fitted with teak and New Zealand rimu. The metal hardware is brass and the sailing gear is stainless with a solid hand railing completely around the yacht. S.V. Tuan was professionally built and is gracious as a classic yacht.
